What do you get when you cross horse racing, with skiing? Skijoring, of course! Horse-drawn skiing, also called skijoring, is a popular tradition in this Polish mountain region. The challenge is to remain upright on your skies behind the horse. This equestrian winter sport might seem unusual, but actually skijor-ers can be found across North America and Europe. Some racetracks have tricky jumps, obstacles and turns, with participants reaching speeds of up to 50 miles per hour - no mean feat. The sport found fame in 1928, when it was demonstrated at the St. Moritz winter Olympics. There’s now an annual competition at the Swiss resort, that attracts thousands of onlookers. With a prize of over half a million dollars up for grabs, competitors aren’t just horsing around.
