The pan flute is a marginal instrument, yet it is the oldest melodic instrument of all. At first, people used individual tubular bones. These were used during hunting to imitate animal sounds. It was not about making music, but about survival. The oldest pan flutes, made from bird bone tubes of varying lengths, were found in burial sites dating back about 3,000 years. Later, such flutes—consisting of 3 to 5 pipes—were assembled from various materials such as bone, wood, and reed. They were called signal pipes. These were used for communication over longer distances, similar to the way the alphorn is used. Much later, the pan flute spread across all continents as a melodic instrument.
