Patarei is a complex of buildings, originally built as a naval fortress under Tsarist rule in 1829-1840. It became a prison between 1920 and 2005, and contains monuments to victims of both Nazi and Stalinist rule. The site is thus closely linked to the sad vicissitudes of Estonia’s recent history. Its rapid deterioration is due to lack of maintenance in harsh climatic conditions. As a part of European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018 celebrations, the Nordic (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden) Europa Nostra organizations and Estonian Heritage Society published a booklet presenting some of the most representative Nordic Winners of the European Heritage Awards/Europa Nostra Awards, as well as the Prize Winners from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The Nordic countries and Estonia also launched a Nordic/Baltic Youth Project, which engages young people with cultural heritage, namely local Europa Nostra Award sites and/or the Most Endangered sites chosen by Europa Nostra and EIB Institute.
