Check out our ultimate buying guide here to learn more about Panerai’s history, its catalog, materials used, and much more: https://www.bobswatches.com/rolex-blo... Even though Panerai is relatively new to the consumer market, the company dates to 1860. Giovanni Panerai founded it in Florence, Italy, as a repair shop, watchmaking school, and showroom. By the 20th century, the company had secured a contract with the Royal Italian Navy to provide them with resilient and highly functional tool watches. That era is when the basic Panerai DNA as we know it today began to take shape. For the next several decades, Panerai only produced military watches. It wasn’t until the 1990s that they opened their catalog to commercial sales. The company has since transformed into a bonified luxury watch brand that competes with the likes of Rolex, Omega, and IWC. Their fierce dedication to their designs from the mid-20th century is what makes Panerai such a massive success. It’s interesting to note that while Panerai was founded in Italy, it has since transitioned operations to Switzerland, making it an official Swiss luxury brand. Join us as we discuss the company further, including Paneria’s four main collections: the Radiomir, Luminor, Luminor Due, and Submersible. The Radiomir earns its name from the radium-based luminous material present on the dial. Watches from this collection are characterized by large, cushion-shaped cases and luminous hour markers and hands. The case does not feature a crown guard, making it instantly recognizable. The Radiomir closely resembles the watches produced for the Italian Royal Navy in the 30s and 40s. Two iterations of the Radiomir exit, those with wire lugs and an onion-shaped crown and those with thicker lugs and a cylindrical crown known as the Radiomir 1940. The Luminor followed in 1949. Like the Radiomir, it takes its name from the luminous material on the dial. With rising concerns surrounding the use of Radium, it was replaced with a Tritium-based material. A cushion-shaped case also distinguishes its design. Only now, the crown is protected by a large, crescent-shaped guard. It features a level that keeps the crown securely screwed into the case to prevent it from coming loose. The Luminor is easily one of Panerai’s most successful models, inspiring the design of two more Panerai collections: the Luminor Due and the Submersible. Panerai introduced the Luminor Due in 2016, featuring a similar design as the Luminor but with a more refined aesthetic that includes smaller case sizes and thinner profiles. When it comes to dress watches, the Luminor Due is the closest option available to the Panerai catalog. That brings us the Submersible, which used to be produced under the Luminor series but has since been rebranded as its own collection. Depending on the year the watch was made, the Submersible dial may or may not include “Luminor” text alongside “Submersible.” A true diver’s watch, the Submersible includes an external rotating timing bezel and higher water-resistance than the other models included in this guide. It also takes much inspiration from its parent model Luminor with a similar cushion-shaped case and over-sized crown guard. Noticeably absent from the Luminor series is the rotatable bezel. Movements: The Panerai catalog includes both in-house and outsourced movements, complete with an impressive selection of complications, such as dual time functions, chronograph yacht timers, and convenient power reserve indicators. Those include both manual-winding and automatic movements as well as simple, time-only options. When shopping for a Panerai watch, it’s often helpful to decide which functions you would like the watch to include and go from there. For example, if you seek a three-hand Panerai with self-winding, anything powered by the in-house cal. P.4000 or P.9010 will appeal to you. Materials: Panerai watches are also produced in various material options, such as traditional steel and gold and unique titanium, bronze, and ceramic. However, the company also has numerous innovative materials in its repertoire, such as carbon fiber-based Carbotech and MBG Tech composed of metallic glass. The Panerai portfolio has a watch to suit nearly any budget, ranging from entry-level to well over six-figures. Despite the many options currently available, the original Panerai blueprint remains at the heart of every watch the company produces.
