Don McLean, in his iconic song “American Pie,” referred to the passing of Buddy Holly as “The Day the Music Died.”It was a poetic way of honoring someone whose life and art transcended his time—marking not just an end, but a transformation. A hero’s journey into the next life. To me, Richard embodied what a martial artist should be.We spoke of the arts—all of them. We shared stories of our heroes, dissected their philosophies, and explored why they resonated so deeply with us.But more than anything, we talked about life. Today, we mourn the loss of Richard—but let us be clear:Martial arts is not dead.Richard has simply moved on to the next chapter of his journey. As for me—and I know a few of you feel the same—we are still walking the path. And now, we walk it with an even greater sense of purpose:To carry his gift forward. To become his legacy. To teach what he stood for.To live as he lived. So let us not dwell only on how he left this world…But let us never forget how he lived in it. Never.
