🎧 BY vs UNTIL vs FROM — Finally Understand English Time Prepositions (Easy Conversation Lesson) These three tiny words cause a huge number of mistakes for English learners: by — until — from They look simple… but they completely change the meaning of a sentence. Many learners say things like: “I will wait by 6.” “I will send the email until Friday.” “I work by 5 PM.” Native speakers understand you, but it sounds confusing because each word describes a different relationship with time. In this episode of Mr Everyday English, Ana and Paul explain them using real-life situations instead of complicated grammar rules — so you can finally feel the difference and speak naturally. What you’ll learn 1️⃣ BY = Deadline (The Wall) Meaning: at or before a certain time. The last possible moment. You finish the action before the time limit. Examples: Please send the report by 5 PM. I will call you by tonight. Return the book by Tuesday. If it happens after → you are late. 2️⃣ UNTIL = Duration (The Bridge) Meaning: the action continues and stops at that time. The action is happening during the whole period. Examples: I will study until 10 PM. She stayed at work until midnight. The shop is open until 9 PM. Key idea: You are doing the action the whole time. 3️⃣ FROM = Starting Point (The Beginning) Meaning: when something begins. Often used together with until. Examples: I work from 9 AM until 5 PM. The party is from 8 PM until midnight. I am on vacation from Monday. Why learners confuse them The difference depends on the type of action: Short actions (finish once) → BY send submit arrive finish Long actions (continue over time) → UNTIL wait sleep stay study work Example: I will finish my work by 8 PM (deadline) I will work until 8 PM (continuous action) Completely different meaning. Important negative sentence difference Very important in real English: I won’t finish the report until tomorrow → I will finish tomorrow. I won’t finish the report by tomorrow → I will miss the deadline. One is neutral. One is bad news. After watching Try making your own sentence in the comments: “I will study English until…” “I will wake up by…” “I work from… until…” We read your comments and help correct them.
