Extracapsular neck of #femurfracture occur outside the #hip joint #capsule, reducing the risk of avascular necrosis. They are classified as intertrochanteric (between the greater and lesser trochanters) or subtrochanteric (within 5 cm below the lesser trochanter). These #fractures are most common in elderly #osteoporotic patients, almost twice as frequent as intracapsular fractures, often due to direct trauma like falls. Key risk factors include hip osteoarthritis, which increases stress in the intertrochanteric region. Patients typically present with severe groin pain radiating to the thigh, inability to bear weight, limited hip mobility, and a shortened #limb. #Bruising around the hip is common, with bleeding forming a #hematoma outside the joint. Imaging findings on #X-ray confirm the diagnosis, showing fracture lines outside the joint capsule with displacement along the femur. CT scans can provide further details on fracture pattern and displacement, aiding in surgical planning. This presentation ensures a clear path for diagnosis and targeted management. #USMLE #USMLEPrep #FutureMD #MedStudentLife #MedSchoolJourney #Step1Study #Step2CK #Step3Prep #USMLESuccess #StudyMedicine
