SCF-ORIG - CELEBRATING A MAJOR VICTORY FOR OUR DESERT HOME! On the morning of Monday, March 10, 2025, the Sun City Festival - Off-Road Interest Group (SCF-ORIG) met at 10:00 AM for an unforgettable Desert Clean-Up. What a resounding success it was. Our group showed up in force with boundless enthusiasm and a shared passion for preserving our beautiful desert, the team arrived ready to tackle the task at hand! At least 30 rigs, 6 trailers and approximately 50 people participated in this event. The group was divided into three smaller teams, each led by a fearless leader: Cindy Romano, George Rocheleau, and the dynamic duo, Chico & Lori Garcia. The teams set off with a clear mission: To rid our desert of the trash that had been plaguing it for far too long. The first team, led by Cindy, made their way to the Playground, where they were met with a daunting sight: A massive pile of trash that had been left behind months ago. Unwaveringly, they rolled up their sleeves and got to work. After clearing the initial pile, they continued their westward journey, eventually finding themselves at the heart of the Playground. In a remarkable feat, they removed several hundred nails from the campfire ring area, safeguarding our rigs from the risk of flat tires. The team's tireless efforts yielded an astonishing four trailer loads of garbage, leaving the area transformed. One volunteer aptly noted the joy of no longer seeing the empty tub that had sat for months, a testament to the team's hard work. The second team, led by George, ventured south into the desert, where they encountered pile after pile of trash. Despite the challenges, they persevered, loading up their trailers and vehicles multiple times. Their proximity to the dumpster proved to be a blessing, as they were able to fill a quarter of it with their collected trash. The third team, led by Chico & Lori, set their sights on tackling the entire stretch of 291st Ave, from the meeting point to Patton Road. Although they only managed to cover half the distance, their progress was slowed by the sheer volume of trash. Nevertheless, they filled their 4x4's, pickups, SUVs, SxSs and trailers to the brim, ultimately contributing to filling the remaining quarter of the dumpster. What we found thrown out there in the desert was absolutely baffling. We found an entire bumper with its license plate still intact, many heavy wooden real estate signposts, a crushed cell phone, sofas, and mattresses and box springs just to name a few of the items. Over at the playground the group cleaned up what looked like an entire households furnishings complete with photos, prescription pill bottles and Christmas decorations along with too many other items to mention. George's group found mattresses and office chairs along with a lot of other "Stuff". The garbage bags were quickly filled, and the trailers were constantly loaded to capacity. After 2 ½ hours of intense effort, the teams reunited to celebrate their remarkable achievement. A well-deserved "Heck yea!" goes out to each and every volunteer who dedicated their time and resources to this incredible cause.
