And that will be a central concern for voters as they cast their ballot in parliamentary elections. Story Morocco's government is currently led by the Islamist politician Abdelilah Benkirane. He came to power after street protests in February 2011 in Morocco and across the Arab world. And, after a move by King Mohammed VI to organise a referendum on Constitutional reforms which was followed by parliamentary elections in November of that year. The Islamist Justice and Development Party (PJD) emerged victorious in that vote. Its leader Abdelilah Benkirane became head of the government and formed a coalition that included the Independence Party (Istiqlal). Political differences caused the coalition to collapse in June 2013. The government, more than three years on, is under pressure, not least on its handling of the economy. There is an urgent need to: Reduce the budget deficit Create jobs Restore growth And ... beef up the fight against corruption. The parliamentary elections will give Moroccans the opportunity to pass their verdict on what progress, if any, has been made. Among the central issues: the role of Islam. Benkirane is careful not to claim any sway on that as, in Morocco, the monarch has the status of "Commander of the Faithful". Moroccan Islamists are especially cautious given the violence being perpetrated in parts of the Muslim world in the name of a particular vision of Islam.
