Cygnet Lakes TH, Otter Creek, Violet Springs, Hayden Valley in Yellowstone National Park

An eleven plus mile day hike that took place in September, 2025. Hugh, Cody, Patrick, and I started at the Cygnet Lakes Trailhead and jumped off near the headwaters of Otter Creek. We followed an off-trail route in a Southerly direction until we reached the Mary Mountain Trail in Hayden Valley and exited at it's Eastern trailhead. Weather was pleasant most of the hike; warm in the sun but easily chilled in the shade. . . classic September Yellowstone weather. The clouds were quite dramatic on this day and we encountered an impressive rain/hailstorm on the way back to the Old Faithful area. Bob sat this one out. He was not interested in taking on the bogs and logs in the backcountry! It is worth noting that Yellowstone NP now has a bear management area encompassing a large part of Hayden Valley that does not allow off trail travel certain times of the year (July 15 - September 15). Also, the park does not allow walking in the thermal areas -- we made a point to stay to the periphery/tree/grassy areas when in the vicinity of thermal features.
