🌟✨👶[Lyrics in English and Norwegian below] [Norsk under] This lovely lullaby, "Birdling's good-night to the flowers" by Eleanor Smith, was published in 1894:92 in "Songs For Little Children" by Eleanor Smith (https://archive.org/details/bwb_P9-EB.... The illustrations are from "Flower Children" 1910, and "Bird Children" 1912 by Elizabeth Gordon. Ill. M.T. Ross. Here are the words: Shadows creep along the sky, Birdies now must homewads fly; Hear the songs they sing to greet All their friends the flowers sweet. "Good-night darling mignonette, Good-night, little violet; Good-night pinks and four o' clock, Good-night homely hollyhock! Good-night lily; good-night rose; Good-night ev'ry flow'r that blows*; Thank you for your lovely bloom, Thank you for your sweet perfume. Good-night, feathery fever-few; Heliotrope, good-night to you; Angels dear their watch will keep, While birds and flowers and babies sleep.” "A flower blows" is ambiguous in meaning. It may mean that it grows and blooms, or that it literally puffs up, or that it is 'full blown' as ‘filled with wind, puffed out (lit. and fig.)’. The contemporary Oxford Dictionaries define 'full blown' as ‘fully developed’. Anyway, flowers do grow, they blossom, and dance in the wind; and any of the three can be described as 'blowing', hence 'blows'. In my poetic translation into Norwegian, I have chosen to speak of the wind, as it brings the flowers' fragrances to our attention.
