The impacts of these development inefficiencies are exacerbated when larger and more complex trade spaces need to be managed while encompassing the different architecture topologies and implementation options necessary to converge on a more optimal system design. This paper will discuss how Model Based Systems Engineering, specifically digital twin pipelines, can be beneficial to the product development lifecycle in a Model Based Engineering Environment. Such an approach brings modeling earlier into the design cycle, supports more perceptive system architectural and design trades, and systematic qualification. Maintaining a consistent set of system models that evolve with the maturity of the design provides an integrated and collaborative development environment that will inform detailed requirements derivation and implementation decisions towards a more capable and efficient system design. Title: Digital Twin’s Lifecycle Applications Presenters: Denver Smith, Dr. Robert Stevens, and Dexter Becklund, The Aerospace Corporation Abstract: Digital Twins provide the promise of intelligent virtual systems that can inform the user in all aspects of the physical system. However, the realities of current approaches fall vastly short of this. Modern applications tend to focus on a subset of models that look specifically at operational use cases. A lifecycle approach to Digital Twins is needed to fully achieve the potential of these new technologies. Aerospace Corporation is pursuing the development of a modular architectural framework for the application of a Digital Twin across the lifecycle of an acquisition program. This modular lifecycle approach is being applied to and validated against a current CubeSat program. As part of this effort, new tools are being created to modernize our processes around the integration and visualization of modeling and simulation at all stages of the lifecycle for satellite development programs. The 2023 Systems Engineering Forum series, hosted by The Aerospace Corporation, in collaboration with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, focuses on applying innovative systems engineering principles – such as Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), Digital Engineering, Enterprise Systems Engineering – across the space enterprise, contributing to mission success while advancing the state of the discipline. The forum, currently held virtually, highlights the unique contributions of The Aerospace Corporation and JPL as developers and practitioners of best practices in systems engineering, particularly as applied to the space industry. These events are applicable to U.S. government, international organizations, industry, vendors, academia, professional societies, and trade associations.
