A team led by Dr. Duck-Jong Han of the Division of General Surgery has performed its two-hundredth successful pancreas transplant, with a simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplant using organs from a brain-dead donor. AMC is the first Korean hospital to attain this number of pancreas transplants. A one-year patient survival rate of 96.8% was also reached. For diabetic patients experiencing serious complications because their pancreas cannot secrete insulin, or their insulin doesn't function properly, a pancreas transplant is considered a fundamental treatment method. However, owing to a general lack of awareness of the procedure in Korea, only a total of 279 pancreas transplants have been performed domestically. In such a setting, the fact that AMC has performed 200 pancreas transplants or 72% of the domestic total, on top of the nation's radical shortage of organ donors, reflects the significance of the achievement. The one-year and five-year pancreas transplant survival rates attained at AMC since 1999 are 96.8% and 93.1% respectively. These figures are notably on par with the one-year survival rate of 97% achieved at the University of Minnesota Medical Center, which boasts the world's highest volume of pancreas transplants at over two thousand, making it the Mecca of pancreas transplants. Dr. Duck-Jong Han / Division of General Surgery For diabetic patients who require lifelong insulin, a pancreas transplants is the best method to make a clean break from insulin. But in Korea, pancreas transplants are not very widespread because of the many associated problems. The operation itself is not easy, and surgical management is also a challenge. // The fact that we have performed 200 pancreas transplants at AMC shows that it is a universally valid surgery that can become widespread. The attainment of 200 pancreas transplants at a world-class level is a source of pride that is expected to bring a new awareness of pancreas transplantation to Korea.
