The major decision taken in the recent (Defense Acquisition Council) DAC meeting related to Active Protection measures for 3000 Indian tanks and other armored vehicle. In the recent meeting, The Defense Acquisition Council has taken major decisions to strengthen Indian Armed forces and push Make In India strategy. You can think of this Active protection Measure a shield neutralizing any anti tank missile entering in its area. We will discuss about this in detail and how its going to be force multiplier of our armored units and tank. But before that lets understand what are the challenges being faced by tanks in modern warfare. In the era of modern warfare, many countries have acquired anti-tank weapons such as Anti-Tank guided missiles(ATGMs) which can defeat any main battle tank's frontal armour. DRDO has also built similar missiles named NAG & Helina. To counter these threats, vehicles need Active Protection measures that will ensure the survivability of the crew and vehicle – as well as the capability to detect low signature shooters and engage them in seconds. While DRDO is still building on developing indigenous Active Protection measures, however it will still take 2-3 years for its developmental trail. Meanwhile, Indian is eyeing Rafael's Trophy Active Protective System(APS). There are not many APS offered by at present and Rafael's Trophy is the best one among all. Taking about the Rafael's TROPHY, it is already a battle proven platform and has reshaped global battlefields, enabling an unprecedented level of survivability. It is already in use on Merkava 3&4 MBTs and Namer APCs, and was selected by the U.S. Army for the Abrams MBT family. With over 500,000 operational hours, it is the only APS that has already saved lives. Now, lets understand how this system works. TROPHY creates a neutralization bubble around the vehicle. Trophy is very quick in detecting, classifying and engaging all known chemical energy (CE) threats – including recoilless rifles, ATGMs, AT rockets, HEAT tank rounds, and RPGs. It is not only capable of neutralizing the enemy's anti-tank teams but can locate the fire source, enabling the crew to return fire effectively. TROPHY’s 8X8 vehicle protection system is the most mature APS for 8x8s in the field. Trophy can also be combined with the Samson 30 and equipped with SPIKE LR2 ATGMs, maximizing capabilities of the fighting vehicle and crew. DAC has cleared a proposal to upgrade protection levels of over 3,000 armoured fighting vehicles, including main battle tanks and infantry combat vehicles. The plan is to increase operational efficiency by adding counter measure systems and early warning systems to the fleet. The defence ministry has cleared indigenous weapons programs worth over Rs 13,700 crore, including acquisition of a modernized version of Arjun battle tanks and increasing protection levels for over 3,000 armoured fighting vehicles currently in service. It is speculated that Indian Army is planning to equip 13-14 armoured regiments with Active Protection Systems (APS) with hardkill capability. As we have seen in past the procurement process for Armed forces was very sluggish and even took 7 years to complete. However, as per the recent decision of DAC, all capital acquisition contracts, other than design and development projects, must be completed in two years.
