Rev. Phoebe challenges us to examine the true intentions behind our spiritual practices. Drawing from Jesus's warning in the Gospel about practicing piety for social approval, we're invited to consider whether we're seeking God's glory or our own. The message addresses a critical tension: Jesus tells us to beware of public displays of faith done for human praise, yet we're also called to be visible witnesses in the world. The sermon reminds us that being secretive about faith to gain social approval is just as dangerous as being outspoken for the same reason. The problem isn't the behavior but the intention. Through the lens of Lent, we're called to realign both our inward intentions and outward actions toward God, surrendering our egos and trusting in divine love. This requires radical hope, the kind of stubborn, that believes in our transformation despite our dust-bound nature. God sees all our flaws and still believes in us, asking us to cultivate that same transformative hope toward ourselves and others.
