SOUNDBITE (English) Gregory Castanias, lawyer at Jones Day law firm (supports decision): "Today's decision carries forward the promise that the Supreme Court made in 1997; that's decision Washington against Glucksberg. In course of ruling that case, patients had no constitutional due process right to a physician-assisted suicide. The court said that this was appropriately left to the states and their electorates and this decision now allows for states to make make those decisions instead of the US attorney general." SOUNDBITE (English) Gregory Castanias, Lawyer at Jones Day law firm (supports decision): "The significance of today's decision is that it upholds, against federal government's opposition, the Oregon death of dignity act. And that act now provides a pattern for other states should they so choose to make legal under carefully circumscribed circumstances physician assisted suicide." 8. Wide shot of White House spokesman Scott McClellan walking to pod 9. SOUNDBITE (English) Scott McClellan, White House spokesman: "I would express our disappointments. I know the department of justice is reviewing the decision. We are disappointed at the decision, the president remains fully committed to building a culture of life. A culture of life that is built on valuing life at all stages and that's the president's commitment." 10. Wide of Colby May, special counsel at American Centre for Law and Justice walking down stairs(opposes decision) 11. SOUNDBITE (English) Colby May, Special Counsel at American Centre for Law and Justice: "We believe that it is legally correct to go at that direction. And we do not support movements to early end lives. There will be a natural end to life and the longer you should provide medication to paleate or relieve pain and suffering and treat whatever is you possibly can. But the very idea that a physician would be able to prescribe medication to end someone's life, we think is a do not go area." AP Television News FILE Washington, DC- October , 2005 12. Various of anti-euthanasia protesters STORYLINE: The U.S. Supreme Court upheld Oregon's one-of-a-kind physician-assisted suicide law on Tuesday, rejecting a Bush administration attempt to punish doctors who help terminally ill patients die. Justices, on a 6-3 vote, said that a federal drug law does not override the 1997 Oregon law used to end the lives of more than 200 seriously ill people. New Chief Justice John Roberts backed the Bush administration, dissenting for the first time. The administration improperly tried to use a drug law to punish Oregon doctors who proscribe lethal doses of prescription medicines, the court majority said. None of the other 49 states has a similar law. Oregon is one of four places in the world that legally authorise active assistance in dying of patients, according to the Euthanasia Research & Guidance Organization (ERGO). Countries with specific laws against assisted suicide include Norway, where the practice carries a criminal charge of accessory to murder, according to ERGO. suicide."
