One billion people worldwide worship under the Hindu faith, according to the Pew Research Center. Hinduism is the third largest religion after Christianity and Islam. The religion is also credited as being the oldest in the world. The Hindu worship ritual of havan, or agni hotra, is done in “sacrificial fire” and “kindled with the chanting of vedic mantras” where essentially, offerings are made. Havan serves as a form of purification and doing it in the open allows for Hindus to detoxify the air, according to their belief. Frank M. Charles Memorial Park in Howard Beach is the destination some Hindus living in Southern Queens travel to in order to practice havans. The park is a constituent of the National Park Service and a part of Jamaica Bay. It is encompassed by nearby JFK airport which has planes buzzing in and out of the area, as well as the MTA’s A train to the Rockaways, which usually can be seen chugging along its path in the park's background.
