This is the good news many of you have been waiting for. As of July 2025, Interactive Brokers (IBKR) Japan now offers NISA (tax-free investment) accounts. This is a game-changer for specific people, especially US citizens in Japan. For years, Americans have been in a difficult spot: Japanese brokers (like Rakuten or SBI) wouldn't let them buy US-domiciled ETFs. Japanese-domiciled mutual funds (the only option in Tsumitate NISA) are considered PFICs by the IRS, creating a US tax nightmare. This meant US citizens could only buy individual Japanese stocks in their NISA, which is not an ideal investment strategy for most. With the new Interactive Brokers NISA, US citizens can finally open a NISA account and buy US-domiciled ETFs (like VT or VTI) within the tax-free Growth section. This video breaks down: Who this is for (and who can ignore this) The exact problem US citizens faced (PFICs & broker licenses) How the Interactive Brokers NISA solves this The limitations (No Tsumitate section for US persons) The key disadvantages to be aware of (Minimum investment & no tax-reporting account) ABOUT RETIREJAPAN: RetireJapan is a community and resource for English speakers in Japan interested in personal finance, investing, and retirement.
