In this episode, I leave the mountain town of Caraz, Peru and head towards the small coastal village of Tortugas, but not by the easy route. Instead, I choose the high-altitude adventure path via Chicarhuapunta Pass at 4,314 meters. What follows is a wild mix of muddy trails, a landslide, shifting weather from sun to fog to rain, and stunning Andean landscapes. At the top, I meet another rider heading to the coast, and we continue together through high-altitude terrain, thick fog, and into a breathtaking canyon descent. After parting ways, I drop to the Pan-American Highway, where I’m hit with a violent side wind and even a sandstorm as the terrain dramatically shifts into Peruvian desert. Finally, I reach Tortugas, just in time for a magical sunset by the ocean — a true reward after one of the most contrasting and challenging rides.
