In this video, I am going to cover 3 job titles that are most common in data science. We will cover the differences between data analyst, data scientist and data engineers. 1. DATA ANALYST Data analyst is a beginner-level type job Data analysts analyze company data, discover key insights and solve critical business problems with data. The average salary of data analysts is around 70K in the US Most data analysts’ jobs require 1-3 years of experience and a bachelor’s of degree in STEM-relate field (STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics. 2. DATA SCIENTIST According to Forbes, Data science is the best job in America for the 4th year in a row with median base salary of 108 thousand dollars a year. In general, data scientists conduct several tasks similar to data analysts but they also apply machine learning techniques to train AI/Ml models to perform predictions and help drive strategic business decisions. Generally speaking, data scientists analyze big data, perform A/B testing, and maybe build simple statistical models in Sklearn. In business, data scientists develop predictive models to forecast sales in the future. Predictive models attempt at forecasting future sales based on historical data. For example, Data Scientists can predict future daily sales based on features such as store promotions, demand, competition, and seasonal effects such as black Friday and Christmas sales. In marketing, data Scientists can perform customer market segmentation models, analyze customers churn, optimize marketing strategies, and quantify customer lifetime value to perform risk reward decisions. 3. DATA ENGINEER A data engineer manages data infrastructure, create data pipelines to store and retrieve company’s massive datasets. Data engineers have strong software background and they generally possess advanced programming skills Big data engineers or architects play a key role in designing, building big data environment in Hadoop and spark systems. Big data engineers are generally experts in data warehousing solutions, can work with petabytes of data on a daily basis. Hiring managers looking for big data engineers look for strong programming experience in Java, C++, PHP, Python and Scala. Big data engineers should have strong knowledge in databases such as MangoDB. The average salary of data engineers in the US is around 130K USD per year.
