► In this video: Located on the southern most side of the Aegean Sea, Crete is the biggest of all Greek islands. The Crete is renowned for its pin-up beaches, wild natural beauty, exquisite cuisine and thousands of years of culture and history. Islands in Mediterranean are famous for its beaches and Crete is no different, it has such beaches in abundance, but what surprised us is its snowcapped mountains, river valley and apple orchards. Read to find out more. ► How to reach: The most convenient way to reach Crete is by air, it has its own airport but if you are on another Greek island then you can come by sea. ► Places we explored: Vai Vai is located on the eastern most side of island. It is definitely one of the most famous beach in east Crete, as its main feature is the large palm grove with the Cretan Date Palm, which makes it different from the rest. the palm forest of Vai, is one of the most popular sights in Crete and one of the most beautiful and special places in the whole Mediterranean. Vai is not the only palm forest in Crete, but it is certainly the largest. An exotic sandy beach with whitish sand is formed near the shore, backed by the edenic palm forest, reminding of African and Caribbean seascapes. Tip: Climb up the stairs to the right side of the beach and after a 15 min hike, you will come at the next beach called psili ammos which is a lot more private than Vai however Just as beautiful as via. Psili Ammos Psili Ammos is just 10 mins drive away from Vai beach. The scenery is awesome and there are three sandy beaches close by, not at all crowded. Small cluster of ruins, Itanos Architecture ruins, that extend into the sea so if you have a mask make sure to explore the coast. Its name means Fine Sand and the sand extends up to the hill. The beach is formed at the end of a narrow valley that is covered with huge sand dunes. Skinaria Beach Skinaria beach (or Shinaria) is located in the east part of the wider Plakias area, The beach is relatively unknown to most locals, but for its few visitors it remains a heaven and some of them regard it as one of the best beaches of Crete. Skinaria is a small beach with soft gray-beige sand and fine pebbles, with crystal blue deep water. The seabed is rocky, but on the north part of the beach, it is sandy. Life thrives in the area, in and out of the sea. it is no coincidence that a scuba diving centre works here and accepts tourists from all over the world. Crete’s Aquarium CRETAquarium, opened in December 2005. Belonging to a large European family of aquariums, the CRETAquarium offers its visitors the unique chance to plunge into the great marine world of the Mediterranean. From the big hunter sharks to the tiny seahorses, the sensational jellyfish, the diversity of marine life is set off against underwater Cretan seascapes such as the rock formations at Matala (South Crete) and the sea bed at Vai (North East Crete). Matala Matala is perhaps as hippie as it sounds or at least its projected as such. Nonetheless, it has something for everyone! Flanked by rocky cliffs and shaded caves. The imposing rock formation slides into the sea at an acute angle and thus provides one of the most unusual beach backdrops in Crete. From their terraces, cafes and taverns offer a unique view over the bay and out over the deep blue sea.Matala Beach is certainly one of the best beaches in Heraklion and a beloved favourite in Greece. The beach gained recognition as a refuge for hippies in the 1960s who tucked into the caves and passed the days away. Now, this once quiet fishing village is a tourist hotspot that many consider the best beach in Crete. after a day at the beach or a stroll through the village you can enjoy an unforgettable sunset over the Libyan Sea with a view of the offshore islands towards Africa Red Beach A more secluded beach, on the other side of the cliff, is Kokkini Ammos just south of Matala, which is known as Red Beach and can only be reached on foot via a rocky path. On the beach itself, which you can reach after about 20 to 30 minutes, you can take off all clothing, because Red Beach is a nudist beach.
