2025.12.27 @ Seoul Art Center recital hall Piano : Soo-Yeon Ham Chinese-American composer Tan Dun is a composer well-known for the hybrid character of his music, in which many different elements are used together within a single work. A distinctive feature of his music is that the traditional Chinese music he encountered in his childhood and the Western musical elements he acquired after entering university coexist within one piece. The Fire, written as a piano concerto, was commissioned by the New York Philharmonic in 2008, and it was premiered on April 9 of the same year by the Chinese pianist Lang Lang under the baton of Leonard Slatkin. In this work, the piano is used not only as a Western keyboard instrument, but is also played using the techniques of the traditional Chinese instrument pipa, and even treated like a traditional percussion instrument. Western tonal systems and traditional Chinese scales are also blended together within a single work. Especially in the third movement, the theme that first appeared in the first movement returns, giving the entire work a sense of unity and organic structure. At this moment, the theme sounds somewhat like film music and also recalls the musical atmosphere popular in China in the 1980s and 1990s, which well reflects Tan Dun’s style as a composer who won major international awards such as the Grammy and Academy Awards for his film music for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. It is said that he was inspired by the contrasting energies of the dynamic and static aspects of Chinese martial arts, and applied these to the contrasting characters of “fire” and “water” in this concerto. The concerto is in three movements in total, and all three movements are played attacca without a break, lasting around 30 minutes. However, the piano solo version I am performing today is an arrangement of the third movement, and it takes about 10 minutes. 중국계 미국인 작곡가 탄둔 (Tan Dun) 은 작품안에 여러 요소를 같이 쓰는 혼종적 성격으로 유명한 작곡가 입니다. 그가 어린 시절에 접한 중국 전통의 음악들과, 대학교 이후 습득한 서양음악의 요소들이 한 작품에 혼재되어 있는 것이 특징입니다. 피아노 협주곡으로 작곡된 ‘The Fire’ 는 2008년 뉴욕필하모닉 오케스트라의 위촉으로 작곡되었고, 같은해 4월 9일, 중국 피아니스트 랑랑과 지휘자 레너드 슬래츠킨의 지휘로 초연되었습니다. 이 곡은 피아노를 서양의 건반악기로서 뿐만 아니라, 중국의 전통악기 ‘비파’의 주법으로 연주하거나, 전통 타악기처럼 사용하기도 하고, 서양의 조성 음계 체계와 중국 전통의 음계가 하나의 작품 안에서 함께 어우러집니다. 특히 3악장에서는 1악장에서 등장했던 주제가 다시 등장하여 곡 전체가 통일성과 유기적인 구조를 보여주는데, 이때 이 주제는 영화음악 같기도 하고, 8-90년대 중국에서 유행하던 음악의 분위기로, 이는 ‘와호장룡’의 영화음악으로 그래미상, 아카데미상 등의 세계적인 상을 수상한 탄둔의 특징을 잘 보여줍니다. 그가 중국의 무술의 동적인 부분과 정적인 부분의 에너지의 대립에 영감을 받아 각각 ‘불’과 ‘물’의 성격으로 대입했다고 하는 이 협주곡은 전체 3악장 구성이고, 세 악장이 ‘attacca’ 로 쉬지 않고 연주되어 총 30분의 곡이지만, 오늘 연주하는 피아노 솔로 버전은 3악장을 편곡한 것으로 약 10분이 소요됩니다.
