On November 28, 1979, an Air New Zealand sightseeing flight to Antarctica crashed into Mt Erebus, claiming 257 lives and shaking the entire nation. The massive recovery effort that followed—known as Operation Overdue—was unlike anything New Zealand had faced. Police officers, pathologists, and volunteer teams braved blizzards and 45-degree slopes in a race against time to bring the victims home and offer some sense of closure to those left behind. This documentary reveals just what those first responders encountered as they were dropped into the Antarctic, some with just a days training in disaster. This compelling documentary shows how the Erebus tragedy changed not just the families and first responders, but also the country as a whole. Through interviews, archival footage, and never-heard-before stories, we witness how a tight-knit nation came together under the harshest conditions, reeling from a tragedy that still echoes across New Zealand today.
