The Moral Dilemma of Playing Violent Games

As a society, we definitely accept violent games. GTA, Wolfstein, Hitman... Killing in video-games is, perhaps, the most common gameplay mechanics. Killing in real life is wrong, but we accept the simulation of killing in a video-game. That doesn't seem to be very concerning, after all, it's all virtual. Nothing is real in the game. Yet, we don't accept other forms of ultra-violence in games, such as sexual harassment. But if it's all virtual, then shouldn't we accept even the worse forms of violence in games? This problem is known as the Gamer's Dilemma. In this video, we're going to break down this dilemma, and present a few arguments why it's ok to play a game like GTA, but it isn't ok to play a game like Rapelay (also known as Reipurei). Subtitles/CC available in English and in Portuguese! I directly quote only two authors in the video, Morgan Luck, the creator of the gamer's dilemma, and Susan Wolf. However, this video was based on several articles. If you're interested in this topic (fictional violence), then this bibliography could serve as a starting point: Morgan Luck, 2018. "Has Ali dissolved the gamer's dilemma?", Ethics and Information Technology, 20: 157-162. Susan Wolf, 1982. "Moral Saints", The Journal of Philosophy, Vol. 79, No. 8: 419-439. Rebecca Davnall, 2021. "What does the gamer do?" Ethics and Information Technology, 23: 225–237. // This was my favourites article on the topic, and I'll most likely make a full video on it. Jan‑Hendrik Heinrichs, 2021. "Virtual action", Ethics and Information Technology, 23: 317–330. // This was one was also one of my favourites. Michael Goerger, 2017. "Value, violence, and the ethics of gaming", Ethics and Information Technology, 19: 95–105. Erick Jose Ramirez, 2020. "How to (dis)solve the Gamer’s Dilemma", Ethical Theory and Moral Practice, 23: 141–161. David I. Waddington, 2007. "Universals and variations in moral decisions made in 42 countries by 70,000 participants", Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 117 (5): 2332-2337. // This is the experiment on the trolley dilemma that I mention in the video.
