Advances in minimally invasive technologies and surgical techniques—such as robot-assisted surgery—have changed the way many gynecologic conditions are treated today. Dr. F. Michael Shaw explains how the da Vinci Surgical System at Northern Westchester Hospital enhances a surgeon's skills and benefits women at NWH. The advantages of robotic surgery are: • The surgery can be done with smaller incisions and when you operate with smaller incisions you have less risk of wound infections, which is one of the more common complications that can happen with all surgeries. • We also reduce the amount of time that you have to be in the hospital. We used to keep patients three or four days in the hospital after hysterectomies. Now many patients only need to stay in the hospital overnight and they can go home the next day. Some patients can even go home the same day. In fact we are moving in that direction where patients can go home the same day. So recovery time and turnaround time is tremendous. I’ve been practicing here at Northern Westchester Hospital for a number of years and I’m very happy here and my patients who have followed me here from my other institutes where I worked in Westchester County are thrilled with their experience coming to Northern Westchester Hospital.
