In Place of War was inspired by the determination and drive of Mambila Mageza and Ntahbiseng Letsoso to turn a disused electronics shop into a community creative space in Soweto. The space has been operated on zero-funding, over the past four years and been an inclusive and open space for all members of the community. In Place of War gifted the space with £120,000 worth of music, studio and live equipment, collected in the UK and in partnership with Ronnie Scotts. Along with the equipment, In Place of War and Trackside developed a seven-day training programme, bringing global change-makers from nine countries to Soweto to deliver workshops in activism (led by Black Lives Matter/US and Chadi Nachabe/Lebanon), music equipment training (led by Ronnie Scotts), training trainers in the Creative Entrepreneurial Programme, music collaborations led by DJ Yoda (UK) and Dughattu and Rafael Tudesco (Brazil). In Place of War is helping Trackside evaluate the impact they are making in their community through devising new evaluation tools and methodologies. "It's like winning the lottery. Trackside Creative's capacity has quantifiably metamorphosed from being a cultural space hosting live concerts to a fully-fledged recording studio right in Soweto. The responsibility that this all comes with is enormous. The cumulative effects inspiring. We've got the Swiss Cultural Institute very interested who have urged that we apply for their 3-year fund. A game-changer which may lead to Mambila moving on from his 9-5. We are taking this period to strategise, apply for funding, form partnerships, take out insurance and upgrade the space for optimum utilisation of the equipment that In Place of War has gifted us with. What a gift!" Mambila Mageza, Trackside Creative, Soweto, South Africa Young people at Trackside said: ‘Trackside’s growth is evident. You can see that this tree that you planted is now blooming’ ‘I’ve always dreamed of performing at a festival, now I am in a position to curate my own festival. It's on!’ ‘Thinking back there wasn’t even a stage. There was this small flat landing. Now there’s a stage, live bands come and perform here. Lights and even international acts come to perform here. Even this equipment will help create bigger opportunities for artists’ ‘You can see that a lot of things take place at Trackside - T-shirts printing, furniture manufacturing, a lot of things that creatives can plug into. It's entrepreneurship coupled with art’
