Modern road bikes are heavier, more complex, and closer to mountain bikes than ever. In this follow-up to my viral “Gravel Bikes Are a Scam” video, I break down how the industry blurred the lines between road and MTB — and why that’s not always progress. The MTB world drives innovation — and the road-bike world copies it. Every “new” feature on a modern road bike started in mountain biking: disc brakes, thru-axles, wide gearing, even geometry. But somewhere along the way, we lost what made road bikes great. Those old rim-brake, quick-release, tube-tire machines were the hardtail version of road cycling — simple, light, fast, and easy to maintain. Now entry-level “modern” road bikes can weigh 25 pounds, cost more to service, and ride worse for beginners.
