This morning at a meeting of the Toronto Board of Health, Public Health Nurse Marnie Moody spoke out about issues facing Toronto’s public health system. For 23 years, she has worked to reduce the spread of infections, support newcomers navigating the health system, and care for clients with complex needs. But today she highlighted how severe understaffing, burnout, and some of the lowest wages in Canada are undermining public health nurses’ ability to provide the quality, preventative health care Torontonians rely on. Toronto Public Health Nurses now face impossible caseloads — 1 nurse for every 7,300 residents — while clinics remain closed and services shrink. Many nurses are leaving for better pay and manageable workloads elsewhere, causing delayed follow-up on reportable diseases, long waitlists, and fewer supports for Toronto residents. Toronto’s public health nurses are organizing to demand fairness. Because protecting these workers means protecting the health of every single person in this city. #WorthIt
