I misspoke slightly about the construction of the Harmonic Flute: The pipes are made double their normal length from middle G, but then made to overblow to their octave (i.e. to play the right pitch). The hole that’s drilled halfway up helps them to overblow. It’s very rare to have harmonic flutes go harmonic below this point, as the pipes just don’t want to overblow easily as they get bigger.
