Therapeutic treatments with psychedelic drugs have a tumultuous history of discovery, prohibition, and resurgence. Recent research on their therapeutic benefits has demonstrated promising potential for treating a wide range of intractable psychiatric diagnoses. Given the treatments’ complex integration of pharmacology and psychotherapy, and the ongoing attempts to approve the compounds for medical use, psychedelic-assisted therapies and their clinical trials warrant in-depth examination. Representing a perspective from within psychotherapy, I conducted a systematic literature review that investigates how psychedelic therapy trials incorporate a psychotherapeutic element in their methodologies. It also explores how different psychotherapy interventions might affect clinical trial outcomes. The research findings shed light on the biases that appear to exist within the recent clinical trials on psychedelic-assisted therapies, which have important implications for their future investigation and development. Researchers and practitioners alike will gain insight into the nature of psychedelics and their fascinating combination with psychotherapy, which is quickly gaining momentum as an innovative new treatment in mental health.
