Suckler to beef farmers Billy & Niall Nicholson, farm in Crosshaven Co. Cork. In this video they give an overview of their farm and farming system. The farm operates on a 364 calving interval and 3.99 calves/cow/year and have 85% of the cows calved in the first 6 weeks. The Nicholson's are in their 6th year of the Beef Data and Genomics Programme (BDGP) which has helped them focus on the replacement index and make sure that they are only breeding from 4 & 5 star animals. BDGP, together with the BEEP scheme and weight data from animals, shows them what cows are actually performing. They are keen to have high producing 4 & 5 star animals because economically they are delivering for them on farm and keeping the farming system profitable and making sure that suckler farming on the farm is sustainable. The farm is currently is GLAS and the Nicholson's highlight the importance of biodiversity on the farm as they explain that it is important to maintain nature and hedgerows on the farm. #VirtualBeefWeek
