British Journalist John Cantlie's Disappearance in Syria

Rebels freeing prisoners of the Assad regime are discovering more missing individuals in Syria. A man imprisoned for seven months after crossing into Syria by foot was found safe. Initial speculations linking the man to missing US journalist Austin Tice, who disappeared in 2012, were dismissed by Tice's family. The whereabouts of British journalist John Cantlie, kidnapped in 2012, remain unknown, though the UK government stated he was alive in 2019. Cantlie appeared in ISIS propaganda videos, the last of which was released in 2016, showing him discussing damage caused by Western coalition bombings. Cantlie, along with US journalist Jim Foley, was abducted in 2012, Foley was later killed by ISIS member Mohammed Emwazi, known as "Jihadi John." Journalism advocacy group Reporters Without Borders condemned Cantlie's exploitation in ISIS propaganda as "unspeakable acts of torture." Cantlie was last seen in 2016, appearing thin and speaking about bomb-related damage and water shortages in ISIS-controlled areas. In 2019, UK security minister Ben Wallace claimed Cantlie was alive, though no further details were provided.
