Brahui is a Dravidian language spoken mainly in central and southern Balochistan in Pakistan, with smaller communities in Iran and Afghanistan. It is geographically the most isolated member of the Dravidian family, separated from the other Dravidian languages by more than a thousand kilometers. The language is typically written in a Perso-Arabic script and shows strong lexical influence from neighboring Iranian and Indo-Aryan languages such as Balochi, Persian, and Sindhi, as documented in Encyclopaedia Iranica and standard linguistic surveys. Estimates of the speaker population differ across sources: older linguistic references report roughly two million speakers, while the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics includes Brahui among the recorded mother tongues in its 2023 census tables, with variations reflecting differing methods and dates of data collection. UNESCO-aligned surveys and regional linguistic studies note that Brahui faces language-shift pressures due to widespread bilingualism with Balochi and Urdu, though its vitality varies across districts. The term “Brahui” refers to an ethnolinguistic group in Balochistan whose social and political organization historically included Brahui and Baloch tribal confederacies; this is described in Encyclopaedia Iranica and in anthropological studies of the region. Most Brahui speakers live in districts such as Kalat, Khuzdar, Mastung, and Nushki, with traditional livelihoods involving pastoralism or agro-pastoralism, although demographic and economic changes in recent decades have brought greater settlement and occupational diversity. Religious and cultural life aligns with the broader Sunni Muslim and Baloch milieu of Balochistan.
