How Cities and Universities Can Keep Immigrants Safe, With NYC Mayoral Candidate Zohran Mamdani

New York City has long been considered the one of the main epicenters of immigration in the United States. According to the 2020 U.S. Census, nearly 40% of the city’s population is foreign-born, which is likely undercounted. New York City Mayor Eric Adams ran on a platform of protecting migrants, but since Trump has returned to power, Adams has been cozying up with U.S. immigration officials like border czar Tom Homan in a flagrant attempt to have his federal corruption charges dropped.  My guest today is Zohran Mamdani, one of the leading mayoral candidates trying to unseat Eric Adams in the Democratic primary election set to take place this coming June. Zohran is currently a member of the New York State Assembly, representing the 36th district in Queens, and he is an immigrant himself. Born in Uganda to Indian parents, his family moved to South Africa when he was 5 years old, before finally settling in New York two years later.  I spoke with Zohran about sanctuary cities, the chaos at Columbia University, his own immigration story and more.
