Five of the world’s most acclaimed novelists, Tash Aw, Kiran Desai, Esther Freud and Richard Flanagan share their insights on the art of creating a novel with Anuradha Roy. Presented by Vedanta Tash Aw is the author of five novels, most recently The South, and a memoir of a Chinese-Malaysian family, Strangers on a Pier. His work has received major literary recognition, including the Whitbread Prize, the Commonwealth Prize, and an O. Henry Award, and has been nominated three times for the Man Booker Prize. Aw’s writing explores identity, migration, and belonging, often drawing on Southeast Asian histories and personal experience. His novels have been translated into 26 languages worldwide. Esther Freud is the author of ten novels. Her first, Hideous Kinky, was made into a film starring Kate Winslet. Other titles include The Sea House, Mr Mac and Me, and I Couldn’t Love You More. She is the author of the play, ‘Stitchers’, and a children’s book, Enchanted Book. My Sister and Other Lovers is a sequel to her first novel. Richard Flanagan was born in Tasmania in 1961. His books have received numerous honours and are published in more than 40 languages. He won the Booker Prize for The Narrow Road to the Deep North in 2014 and the Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction for Question 7 in 2024. Anuradha Roy’s five novels have been published in sixteen languages, and have won several awards, including the Sahitya Akademi, and the DSC Prize for Fiction. Her books have been longlisted for the Man Booker Prize, and shortlisted for the International Dublin Literary Award. She is also a designer for Permanent Black publishers.
