Ukraine; Lviv; Church of St. Paraskeva Pyatnitsa | UA: м. Львів; Церква Святої Параскеви П'ятниці The Church of St. Paraskeva Pyatnitsa in Lviv stands at the foot of Castle Hill and is among the oldest religious buildings in this part of the city. Researchers indicate that the current church arose on the site of an earlier church dating back to the 13th–14th centuries, and its location outside the city fortifications explains the austere, almost fortress-like character of the structure. The building's current appearance is due to reconstruction in the mid-17th century. After destruction and fire, the church was restored from 1643–1645, and its funding is attributed to the Moldavian ruler Vasile Lupu; a commemorative plaque bearing the Moldavian coat of arms commemorates this. Thanks to such patronage, the Lviv church received a rare cultural accent for the city, combining local tradition with Moldavian historical influences. The church's architecture is particularly striking. It combines features of late Gothic, Ukrainian sacred architecture, and Moldavian-Wallachian influences. Its thick walls, small windows, and defensive silhouette make the church unlike the more formal Lviv churches, while its tall square tower enhances the impression of solidity and inner composure. Later modifications did not destroy the original foundations, but rather complemented them. Sources note significant renovations in the 19th and 20th centuries, including the rebuilding of the tower's crown in 1908 and restoration work in the mid-20th century. Therefore, the church is perceived as a monument that displays several historical layers of Lviv.
