Tolfa is an Italian municipality of 4,669 inhabitants in the metropolitan city of Rome Capital in Lazio. Agricultural center of the Tolfa Mountains, picturesquely leaning against steep trachytic cliffs, on the southern slope of the group. The old part, immediately below the Frangipane fortress now destroyed. The extension of the territory reaches the Tyrrhenian coast, where the hamlet of Santa Severa Nord is located. The term Tolfa has uncertain origins: it could derive from "Tulphae", from the root tol- (to lift), referring to its geographical position; or, according to another hypothesis, it could refer to the name of a Lombard prince, perhaps Agilulfo or Ataulfo. In the territory of Tolfa, the Stone Age (in particular Paleolithic and Neolithic) and the Copper Age are well documented through archaeological finds. Attested with a remarkable wealth of direct archaeological sources is the Bronze Age (last quarter of the third millennium BC - beginning of the first millennium BC). The castle of the Rocca mountain The Frangipane castle is a typical medieval fortress. It was the last bastion of defense for many centuries and managed to protect the Tolfa people even from the Napoleonic army. The Rocca church is the treasure chest of Tolfa. It is located near the castle and was built for the need of the Tolfa people to have a small church on top of "the mountain", which would protect the town from above. Centro agricolo dei Monti della Tolfa, pittorescamente addossato a scoscese rupi trachitiche, sul versante meridionale del gruppo. La parte vecchia, immediatamente sottostante alla rocca Frangipane oggi distrutta. L'estensione del territorio arriva fino alle coste tirreniche, dove è situata la frazione di Santa Severa Nord. Il termine Tolfa ha origine incerta: potrebbe derivare da "Tulphae", dalla radice tol- (sollevare), riferito alla sua posizione geografica; oppure, secondo un'altra ipotesi, potrebbe riferirsi al nome di un principe longobardo, forse Agilulfo o Ataulfo. Nel territorio di Tolfa sono ben documentate, tramite ritrovamenti archeologici, l'età della pietra (in particolare paleolitico e neolitico) e l'età del rame. Attestata con notevole ricchezza di fonti archeologiche dirette è l'età del bronzo (ultimo quarto del III millennio a.C. - inizio del I millennio a.C.). I castello del monte della Rocca Il castello dei Frangipane, è una tipica rocca medioevale. Fu l'ultimo bastione di difesa per tantissimi secoli e riuscì a proteggere il popolo tolfetano anche dall'esercito napoleonico. La chiesa della Rocca è lo scrigno di Tolfa. È situata vicino al castello e fu costruita per l'esigenza del popolo tolfetano di avere una chiesetta in cima "al monte", che proteggesse il paese dall'alto.
