** Note: Video speed is reduced for ease of viewing, in field, action is very fast!!! ** Note: There is no copyright held on this video (except for music and still images) and anyone is free to make use of the visual contents. This video is part of a series of videos on "Indian Pelagic Birds" taken during various pelagic/offshore trips organized by Keralabirder, Goa Bird Conservation Network, Malabar Natural History Society, Cochin Natural History Society, Birdwatchers of Kerala, SA Hussain Memorial Trust etc. Many of these trips were conducted with the help of Dept of Fisheries/Forest, Kerala and other similar organizations (Eg: Coastal Police, Captain of Ports etc.) in other states. The main intention here is to show the birds and their behavior, and provide a basic reference for pelagic bird recognition from Indian coast. When we started the offshore trips from South India in 2010, we were completely clueless about oceanic birds and their distribution across Indian coast. The only data was information from windblown species and the small maps in field guides (which were either too general or had just few crosses/question marks). Persian Shearwater was such a species which showed almost no distribution in the southern coast as per the guides and available specimens. So, we were so elated to see not just one or two, but multiple groups of Persian Shearwaters, which gave us a lot of quality time with them where we could observe, photograph and take videos of their various activities. Thought we had few more sightings post this trips, this was the biggest congregation we have me till now, hope to see them more in the future! They have an elegance in their behaviour as they swim, feed and move around, doing their activities without any sign of hurry. They appear very relaxed! During this video, observe the way they land - they shiver their wings in a peculiar way which I found interesting! While feeding, they often dip their head into water and they stay like that for quite some time! Thanks Ashwini for the still image! Enjoy...
