As America emerged into the 21st century, it was through significant trials. First was the disputed election of 2000 in which the Supreme Court eventually intervened to stop the counting and declare George W. Bush the winner. Then only a few months later on September 11, 2001, Al-Qaeda terrorists flew planes into the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon. In response Bush led Americans into the War on Terror in Afghanistan, and then into the second Iraq War in order to topple the regime of Saddam Hussein. Even with all these travails, American continues to be the world's leading superpower.
