Stylistically speaking, the garage meets the lounge on this energetic 1966 album from legendary drummer Sandy Nelson. Nelson's career began in the late 50s, and he had two big instrumental hits during his early years: "Teen Beat" and "Let There Be Drums." By the time the mid 60s had came around, Nelson was doing the same thing as fellow instrumetalists the Ventures: he released album after album of fun, inoffensive instrumetal versions of the biggest songs on the hit parade. Many of Nelson's records from this period were bought up by middle-aged hipsters who wanted to keep up with the "in" music. Here are some of the best songs from SUPERDRUMS, a representative sampler of his mid-60s style: 1) "Kicks" 2) "Gloria" 3) "Cool Jerk" 4) "Got My Mojo Working" With songs like "Gloria," "Hey Joe," "Time Won't Let Me," and "Kicks," SUPERDRUMS is heavily founded upon the garage punk sound that so characterized 1966. I found my copy of this Sandy Nelson album last spring in a record shop in Cincinnati, Ohio.
