Old Ironsides - The 1st Armored Division from Salerno to the Rapido River With Matthew Graham Part of the Operation Avalanche (Salerno) 80th Anniversary series • Operation Avalanche (Salerno) 80th Anniver... In this episode MAJ. Matthew Graham, Command historian for the 1st Armored Division, will examine the operations of the 1st Armored Division from the end of the Tunisian Campaign in 1943 to the end of Naples campaign in January 1944. We will briefly examine the formation, deployment, and the task organization of the division up to 1943, its employment in both the Salerno landings and its efforts during the Firth Army’s drive up the Italian peninsula and conclude with its preparations for the Anzio Landing in January 1944. Taking a practitioner’s approach to military history, we will analyze the Divisions operations and seek to identify lessons learned for the Armored force in WWII and for the U.S. Army today. Major Matthew Graham is an active-duty armor officer with combat experience in Afghanistan and currently serves as G5 Planner and command historian for the 1st Armored Division at Fort Bliss, TX. His military experience includes service as a platoon leader, company commander, and staff officer in both the 1st Armored Division and the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). He is a graduate of the Art of War Scholars program and the Advanced Military Studies Program at the U.S. Army’s Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, KS. He holds a BA in International Relations from the Virgnia Military Institute, a Master of Arts in Defense and Strategic studies from the University of Texas at El Paso, a Master of Military Art and Science from the Command and General Staff College, and a Master of Military Operations from the School of Advanced Military Studies.
