Dreamy Foiling Conditions - Day 2 - Leg 2 of The Ocean Race Europe

The first 24 hours of the second leg of The Ocean Race Europe delivered a rollercoaster night for the IMOCA fleet. After blasting out of Portsmouth in strong downwind conditions, the seven teams were brought to a standstill off Ushant, trapped in a transition zone where the breeze collapsed and the race reset itself. For Team Malizia, it was a night of big decisions and hard work. After a solid start out of the Solent, Boris Herrmann’s crew opted for the northern route alongside Biotherm and Team Canada Ocean Racing. It proved to be the right call: while other teams stalled offshore, Malizia held on in the leading trio through the night, fighting for every mile in shifting, unstable winds. The Channel had stretched the fleet nearly 40 miles from front to back, but by dawn the pack was compressed to within a handful of miles. Biotherm clung to a narrow lead, Canada briefly grabbed the spotlight with a surge into first, and Malizia kept the pressure on, well positioned for the drag race now unfolding down the Atlantic towards Portugal. From perfect spinnaker sailing out of Cowes, to a windless crawl off Brittany, the crew onboard Malizia - Seaexplorer have already experienced the extremes of this leg. After a sleepless night of transitions and constant sail changes, the race is now wide open as the fleet points south.
