On Valentines Day Weekend, 2026, my wife and three daughters pulled off the best surprise party of my life. It was exactly 11 weeks after my triple bypass (which was the day after Thanksgiving). My wife and I had some games to run up at our pescatarian in Whitehall, MI. She told me I had to fix a leg on a chair in one of the rooms. I enjoy being the “fix-it” man, so we went to the first of our rooms (“door # one”), and I was shocked as you see in this video. My face defines the word “dumbfounded.” Come to find out, this surprise had been in the works since my hospital stay. I’ve wanted to have all my siblings for a weekend at “The Loft on Colby” (our good friend’s VRBO above the Colby Escape Room) for two years but it seemed impossible to get everyone’s schedule in sync. My 70th birthday is not until April, but Julie knew it would be more strategic to shock me if she did it a bit early for Valentine’s Day. Brilliant! I didn’t see it coming and dozens of people had to hold the secret for two months. And they each had to drive about four hours to get here from the Detroit area. It was fantastic! I am so blessed to have had a wonderful close family growing up and an equally wonderful family of three beautiful daughters, their loving husbands, our seven grandchildren (so far?) and the love of my life, Julie… BTW, we are celebrating 45 years of marriage this year. When you add up the years of the five marriages of my siblings and me, the total is 222 years… and counting. Our parents were great role models.
