Step into the future of bioart, science & social justice This video documents 'Imminent and Eminent Ecologies' – the second ground-breaking exhibition in a three-part series by VIAD Research Centre’s Bioart + Design Africa, University of Johannesburg. The exhibition series reimagines how we relate to the world: exploring the deep entanglements between living and non-living beings, humans and the more-than-human, and how culture shapes – and is shaped by – climate. At its core, the series asks: What if we dissolved the boundaries between species, and between the organic and elemental? What kind of world could emerge? Drawing from Karen Barad’s theory of intra-action, it proposes a radical, decolonial vision of trans-species democracy rooted in empathy, care, and mutual respect. Curated by Leora Farber and Brenton Maart, 'Imminent and Eminent Ecologies' features artists from the Bioart + Design Africa team, alongside invited artists including: Adam Broomberg & Rafael Gonzalez, Janneke de Lange, Stacy Hardy, Russel Hlongwane, Francois Knoetze & Amy Louise Wilson, Dean Hutton, Bronwyn Katz, Nandipha Mntambo, Miliswa Ndziba, Uriel Orlow, Theresa Schubert, and Louise Westerhout. Filmed at FADA Gallery, University of Johannesburg, in 2024, this video documentary offers a new look at a landmark moment in African bioart.
