Titles and timings: 1. Allegro in E minor from BWV 1019 0:00 2. 'Gute nacht, o Wesen' from motet, BWV 227 arr. Brett Dean 2:30 3. Andante from BWV 1003 for piano arr. Siloti 6:17 4. Pastorella from BWV 590 (3rd movement), arr. Whittaker 11:12 5. Suite Fragment in F minor BWV 823 13:57 I thought it would be interesting to put together these Bach rarities into a single video. The first and last movements are original keyboard works, while the middle three are transcriptions/arrangements. The first piece is a movement of the G major violin sonata where the violin unusually does not play. It is a dance-like movement which would not have been out of place in one of the partitas, but does not conform to any dance genre. The second, third and fourth pieces are transcriptions: the first of these is an except from the motet 'Jesu, meine Freude'; the second - probably the best known of the pieces here - is taken from the solo violin sonata in A minor (the third movement, originally in C major, here transposed up a tone); the Pastorella is a four movement solo organ work, of which this is the third movement, composed for manuals only (i.e. no pedal part in the organ original). The final piece consists of three surviving movements from an early suite. These are: Prelude starting at 13:57, Sarabande en Rondeau at 15:39 and Gigue at 18:40. I recorded the Pastorella back in 2020, the suite in 2021, the allegro in 2023 and the other two arrangements in late 2024 and early 2025.
