A Farming Village Inside a Collapsed Volcano? // Pululahua, Ecuador

A town inside of a collapsed volcano? Pululahua volcano collapsed 2500 years ago after spewing so much magma that the chambers emptied and the whole thing collapsed in on itself. There are only 2 collapsed volcanoes in the world that have people living in them. San Isidro is the village inside the Pululahua Geobotanical Reserve. It's the only collapsed volcano that has farming in it. The area is incredibly fertile with soil that's rich with volcanic minerals. Most of the land is used for farming - only around 60 people live there. It's very green, peaceful, and charming. You can hike into Pululahua from the Pululahua Mirador. It's about a 1.4 KM hike that drops 300 meters. We decided to spend a few nights in the volcano, so we rode our motorcycle down the back roads into the crater. We stayed at the Pululahua Eco-Lodge (https://goo.gl/maps/9caJqTXRsKYRKN5y6), which was lovely. I think there is only 1 other guesthouse in the crater, but there are many places to camp as well. It's also a great place to hike. You can hike to the top of El Chivo, which has great views of the crater. We hiked around Cerro Podoña, which took about 3 and a half hours and was very pleasant.
