Hi Everyone! My name is Dan, and I am a veterinarian. Today I am talking about puppy mange that is caused by the mite demodex. Demodex can be commonly found in the hair follicles of healthy dogs; however, the number of demodex mites is very low. When a puppy has mange caused by demodex, the mite has significantly outgrown the normal population causing disease. The mites cause damage to the hair follicles. When this happens that puppy will lose fur also known as alopecia. There can be localized demodex or generalized demodex. Demodex is not infectious. The overgrowth of mites is because the puppy's immune system is not as strong as an adult dog. This allows the mites to overgrow and cause fur loss and a skin infection. If the mange is localized, this does not need treatment unless the dog is itchy or in pain. A puppy can outgrow localized demodex. As the puppy gets more healthy and stronger, the demodex population decreases and becomes more normal. This allows for the fur to come back without treatment. In the generalized form of demodex, the mite infection is very large and out of control. The puppy may develop a secondary bacterial infection too. The generalized form of demodex needs treatment of the mange and secondary bacterial infection. In most cases the mange infection can be resolved, but it can take sometime. Also get a physical exam by your veterinarian. Your veterinarian will do a skin scrape to diagnose the mites. The mites are diagnosed with a microscope exam of the debris from the skin scrape.
