Although many have lived in the north Caucasus republic for generations, they are suffering because of the failure of Russia's troops to defeat Chechen separatists in a 21-month war started by the Kremlin. Yet some Russians are happy in Chechnya. Valentin Koralyev is a 20-year-old former Russian soldier. He deserted from the army at the beginning of the war after repeated beatings from his officers.
