Elizabeth, Philip and the Aphrodisiac of War With Dr. Tessa Dunlop Home Front and Civilian content on WW2TV • The Home Front For some reason the first couple of minutes of this did not get streamed. Sorry, I have no idea why. You just missed my introduction and hello to my guest. Tessa Dunlop joins us to talk not just about the Royal couple but, the nature of dating and marriage and how it was impacted by the Second World War. There were two marriage spikes in the UK – one in 1939-40 and one in 1947 when returning service men and women rushed down the aisle younger than ever before. Elizabeth and Philip were pinned up as the new idyll, with Britain going through something of a moral crisis because so many of the rapid marriages at the beginning of the war ended in divorce or separation. Elizabeth’s relationship with Philip although on a higher level, was exemplary of so many relationships young girls had .. idealising their young men overseas and in peril. Writing to them constantly and yet hardly knowing them. All leading to this marriage boom postwar. Indeed, men had never had a higher cachet. We will also discuss sex and how sexual practises changed during the war for older women, but perhaps less so for biddable young girls just out of school and into military uniform. Post war the average age for a bride dropped to 22! Dr. Tessa Dunlop is an acclaimed author (London Sunday Times bestseller The Century Girls and The Bletchley Girls) and Royal Television Society awarded broadcaster. She was a presenter on the BBC's BAFTA-winning series Coast, appears on numerous history documentaries and talk shows, and writes for The Daily Mail.
