Rare color footage from October 1962 captures a historic moment of U.S.–South Vietnamese friendship during the Republic of Vietnam's 7th Independence Day celebrations in Saigon. Highlights include: South Vietnamese military and student parade units marching in precision through the streets of Saigon, past colonial-era buildings and cheering crowds. U.S. Navy sailors aboard the destroyer USS Mahan (DLG-11) hosting Vietnamese orphans for a ship tour and distributing treats. President Ngo Dinh Diem arriving at the dock, greeted by U.S. Ambassador Frederick Nolting, piped aboard with full naval honors, and welcomed by Commodore Lester E. Hubbell and Captain Ivar A. Johnson. The President touring the ship and receiving a commemorative silver tray as a symbol of alliance. Terrier anti-aircraft missiles being positioned on the Mahan’s launcher, underscoring American naval support in Southeast Asia. Shot in unedited 16mm color by U.S. military cameramen (National Archives identifier 111-LC-46157), this silent film preserves a brief window of optimism and close cooperation between the two nations in the early years of deepening U.S. involvement in Vietnam. A vivid record of goodwill, military pageantry, and Cold War partnership on the eve of major escalation.
